Why Vision Matters

Most people underestimate the value of vision. Vision is often described as a picture of a preferred future. Without knowing where you are going, you will have a difficult time knowing if where you are is where you think you want to be.

As Lewis Carroll, the author of Alice in Wonderland, wisely said, “If you don’t know where you are going, any road will get you there.” Similarly, King Solomon, who authored many proverbs, wrote, “Where there is no clear revelation, people do whatever they want.”

The Importance of Clarifying Purpose

So often, people dive into life ventures without first clarifying the purpose and end goal. This applies to areas like marriage, career, business, education, sports, and even faith. Every activity we undertake should align with our God-given purpose and potential.

When we lack clarity, we often expend energy without reaping lasting satisfaction. The consequences can include depression, despair, a sense of helplessness, hopelessness, emotional exhaustion, and burnout.

Beginning with the End in Mind

In The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen R. Covey identifies “Begin with the End in Mind” as the second habit, followed by “Put First Things First” as the third. When we know our destination, we can set purposeful priorities and navigate challenges effectively. This awareness helps us make necessary adjustments along the way.

Vision Requires Effort

Developing a clear vision takes work. It is the product of intentional effort, or what Covey calls “Being Proactive,” his first habit. Before taking action, it’s essential to think through and define what we desire, then map out the steps needed to achieve it.

The Bible echoes this wisdom in Luke 14:28-30. Jesus uses an illustration from construction to emphasize the importance of preparation:

“But don’t begin until you count the cost. For who would begin construction of a building without first calculating the cost to see if there is enough money to finish it? Otherwise, you might complete only the foundation before running out of money, and then everyone would laugh at you. They would say, ‘There’s the person who started that building and couldn’t afford to finish it!’”

From Dreams to Action

Many people have great ideas and dreams, but these need to be transformed into a detailed vision. A clear vision creates a roadmap to guide you toward your goals. Without this pathway, you risk losing your sense of direction and failing to arrive at your desired destination.
