There is Power in Choice

Life is a series of choices. From the moment we wake up to the time we go to bed, we are constantly making decisions—what to eat, how to spend our time, and which goals to pursue. Some choices seem insignificant, while others hold the power to shape our future. If we are to move forward and create meaningful change in our lives, we must recognize the importance of making choices and taking action.

Change is impossible without choice. Every major life transition—whether it’s switching careers, improving relationships, or adopting healthier habits—begins with a conscious decision. Without the willingness to make a choice, we remain stuck in the same patterns, unable to progress.

Many people fear making choices because they are uncertain of the outcome. They worry about making the wrong decision, leading to hesitation and inaction. However, avoiding choices does not eliminate the need for change; it simply delays it. By actively choosing, we take control of our circumstances rather than allowing external factors to dictate our path.

The Consequences of Not Choosing

Not making a choice is, in itself, a choice. It is a decision to remain stagnant, to accept things as they are. To float downstream like a dead fish. This passive approach can lead to missed opportunities, regret, and frustration. When we fail to make decisions, we surrender our power to shape our own future.

For instance, an individual who remains in an unfulfilling job out of fear of the unknown may find themselves feeling stuck and unmotivated. Likewise, someone who avoids addressing problems in a relationship may watch it deteriorate over time. In both cases, the refusal to make a choice prevents personal growth and fulfillment.

An Example of Choice and Change

The Bible offers many examples of the power of choice in bringing about change. One of the most striking is the story of Joshua and the Israelites. As they stood on the verge of the Promised Land, Joshua issued a powerful challenge to the people: “Choose this day whom you will serve” (Joshua 24:15). The Israelites had to decide whether they would follow the true God or continue in their old ways, worshiping false gods. Their future depended on this decision, as embracing God’s path would lead to prosperity, while choosing otherwise would result in hardship.

This story highlights that change requires a conscious commitment. Just as the Israelites had to choose obedience and faith to move forward into their destiny, we must make intentional decisions to bring about transformation in our own lives.

Making choices requires courage and confidence. It involves accepting that there are no guarantees but understanding that progress only comes through action. The most successful individuals are those who take decisive steps, learning from their experiences—whether they were triumphs or setbacks.

To make effective choices:

  • Identify your goals: Knowing what you want makes it easier to determine the best course of action.
  • Explore your options: Consider what you could do and the potential outcomes, but don’t allow over-analysis to lead to paralysis.
  • Draft a plan and trust yourself: Believe in your ability to make informed decisions, set a course and adjust as needed.
  • Be prepared for some measure of uncertainty: No choice comes with an absolute guarantee, but every decision will need refinement that leads to learning and growth.

Move Forward with Purpose

When we make choices, we take charge of our future. Progress happens when we take deliberate steps toward our goals, no matter how small. Change is not about making one perfect decision; it is about continually choosing to move forward daily, even in the face of challenges. I have a friend who often says, “I don’t care how or where we go as long as it is forward.”

The importance of making good courageous choices cannot be overstated. If we want to grow, and create positive change, we must be willing to step outside of our comfort zones and make decisions that align with our values and aspirations. In doing so, we shape our lives with intention, unlocking our full potential and embracing the future with confidence.
